Family strengthening

Through the Family Strengthening, we enable children who may lose support from their families to continue to grow in a stimulating and nurturing family environment with a relative or guardian. We work directly with families and communities to help them protect and effectively manage their children, in cooperation with local authorities and other service-providers.

The target group consists of orphans and abandoned children aged 0-15 years, who were deprived of the care from their biological family or who are at risk of finding themselves in that situation. Specifically, these are:
•    Total orphans (having both parents deceased),
•     Children who are heads of family (having both parents deceased, caring for their brothers and sisters who still attend primary or secondary school)
•     Partially orphans (second parent living being needy)
•    Children with at least one parent suffering from a chronic illness such as HIV / AIDS, tuberculosis or other (the second parent if not sick, is needy)
•    Children with physical, psychological or moral abuse,
•    Adults living in difficult circumstances and having to care for an orphan and vulnerable child selected by the programme.

SOS Children's Villages’ support to beneficiaries includes the following:
•    Ensuring that the families have access to basic services for their children: response to the  immediate needs of children and their development (physical needs, educational, health and  psychosocial support, etc.)
•    Helping families build their capacity to protect and care for their children: support to the people in charge of the child to develop their knowledge and skills; provide them with a sustainable source of income.
•    Strengthen systems to support vulnerable children and their families within the community and members of the community to be able to organize, provide sustainable solutions to the needs of vulnerable children and families and to empower communities to claim their own rights.

After a period of 3 to 5 years, when the family has all the knowledge needed for a quality child care thanks to training sessions and through micro-credit, the guardians lead an income generating activity so that they can meet the basic needs of the child, then the child exits from the programme. In fact, being part of the Family Strengthening entitles guardians or heads of vulnerable families to a three-year training programme through which they can acquire all the knowledge they need to lead a sustainable and resilient life with their children.

Our programmes in Abomey-Calavi, Dassa-Zoumé and Natitingou in Benin enable us to fulfil the rights of thousands of children. SOS Children’s Villages Benin is a member of Children's Villages International, operational in 133 countries and territories.
